Insights on Today's Reading
Nahum 1 - This is God's second prophecy to Nineveh, the first being Jonah's prophecy which brought repentance from the king and his people and a reprieve from God. Now, the people of Nineveh have rebelled against the Lord and He is promising judgment. God is slow to anger and gives people a chance, many times, to turn around, verse 3. And, He knows within a city like Nineveh where His true followers are and He cares for them, verse 7. But God will still judge those that have attacked His people and He promises Judah that peace is coming, verse 15.
Nahum 2 - The details of the coming destruction of Nineveh are announced. The color "red," verse 3, speaks of the people who will come to conquer. Babylonian soldiers were known to favor red. Some have read verse 4 and think of our current conditions of road travel with our "chariots" rampaging through our streets, "jostling one another!"
Nahum 3 - The destruction of Nineveh will be complete. As she had been cruel to nations that she conquered, so she would feel that cruelty against her.
An interesting archaeological note: For years skeptics would ridicule the Bible for mentioning Nineveh. No one had ever found such a city, not until 1857, when a team of archaeologists unearthed the city and found it to be as vast as Jonah describes it in Jonah 3:3, "Nineveh was an exceedingly great city, a three-day journey in extent."
