Insights on Today's Reading
2 Timothy 1 - Paul writes his closing letter to his "son-in-the-faith," Timothy. Paul encourages Timothy by reminding him of the "gift of God" and the "spirit of...power, love and a sound mind" verse 6. Paul shares his own assurance of knowing God has complete control of his life and future, verse 12.
2 Timothy 2 - Paul encourages Timothy to teach what he has learned and to encourage his students to pass the teaching onto the next generation, and so on, verse 2. Verse 15 teaches diligence in living a godly life by "rightly dividing" the Word of God. Paul also talks about being a "vessel for honor, sanctified and useful for the Master" verse 21.
2 Timothy 3 - Paul reminds Timothy of "perilous times" that will come on Christianity, especially in the last times. Paul then encourages Timothy to keep studying the Scriptures which he learned as a child and then Paul emphasizes the four-fold purpose of the Bible: to teach; to rebuke; to correct; and to instruct, verse 16.
2 Timothy 4 - In this chapter Paul gives his "last words" in verses 6-8 as he is ready to be "poured out as a drink offering" for the Lord. He is sad that some believers left him but he is grateful for those who have stood faithfully with him.
