Insights on Today's Reading
John 6 - This chapter begins with the Feeding of the 5,000 and reveals the fact that a young boy, verse 9, donated his lunch of a couple of fish and five "sandwich rolls" to Jesus. I remember Vance Havner, a southern evangelist, once saying, "All Jesus needed was one kid with a couple of fish burgers and He would feed that crowd!" It's interesting that the disciple who brought the boy to Jesus was Andrew. You'll note on several occasions that Andrew "brought people to Jesus." It's also quite revealing that when the disciples thought of feeding such a crowd was an impossibility, verses 7-9, Jesus made sure there was enough leftovers to fill twelve baskets, verse 13, one for each of the doubting disciples! The chapter goes on to reveal Jesus saying, "I Am the Bread of Life," verse 35. But then Jesus would give a tough message that people needed to partake of His flesh and blood to be saved. A lot of people were offended by this and would no longer follow Him, verse 66. Of course, Jesus meant that His eventual death would be giving His body and blood for the salvation of the world.
