DAILY BIBLE READING for Week of October 7-13, 2018
10/7 Jeremiah 7-9 - In chapters 7-10 Jeremiah is called to preach a message in the gate of the temple. He speaks of how the temple had become a "den of thieves." People were becoming more and more insensitive to sin in chapter 8. In chapter 9 Jeremiah gives one of the great passages in verses 23,24 on knowing what is really important in life.
10/8 Jeremiah 10-12 - Jeremiah speaks in chapter 10 of the futility of idolatry and that it is God who has made the earth. In chapter 11 Jeremiah criticizes the Jews that they have as many "gods" as they have cities! Jeremiah prays, in chapter 12, and voices his frustration. God reminds him that is ministry will be tough.
10/9 2 Thessalonians 1-3 - Paul writes to encourage these believers not to worry about the coming of the Lord. If they're saved, they're ready. Some people had made the error of thinking that the Lord already came and those who are still on earth were "left behind." The concern for all of us is to be sure that we have truly received Christ, that we are really "in the faith." Once that is settled, there needs to be diligence that we give others the opportunity to be saved too.
10/10 Jeremiah 13-15 - In chapter 13 God gives Jeremiah, and the people, a great object lesson in the sash that Jeremiah was to wear, then to hide it near the Euphrates River, then dig it up and find it worthless. This would speak of Judah's captivity and the affect it will have on them. In chapter 14 Jeremiah speaks of droughts but he pleads with God not to leave them. In chapter 15 Jeremiah knows that judgment will come but he still finds refreshment in God's word.
10/11 Jeremiah 16-18 - Jeremiah is told in chapter 16 not to get married nor have children primarily because of the awful judgments that will come. In chapter 17 you will find one of the greatest illustrations of the difference between the wicked and the righteous in verses 5-8. Chapter 18 speaks of the object lesson of watching a potter work with clay as an example of how God wants to work with His people.
10/12 1 Timothy 1,2 - Paul writes to this young pastor that Paul had led to the Lord years before. He encourages him to stay true to the Gospel and Paul gives his own testimony in chapter 1. Paul then, in chapter 2, speaks of the need to pray for everyone and realize that God would have "all men to be saved."
10/13 Jeremiah 19-21 - Chapter 19 speaks of Jeremiah shattering a clay pot to show the utter destruction of those who reject the Lord. In chapter 20 Jeremiah faces persecution at the hands of the priest, Pashhur. In chapter 21 Jeremiah has an important word to Zechariah, surrender to the Babylonian king, Nebuchadnezzar, or face the consequences of severe punishment.
