Insights on Today's Reading
Matthew 12:1-21 - Jesus' disciples picked grain to eat and He defended their actions and made clear His authority as to how the Sabbath could be celebrated. He went further by healing a man on the Sabbath, emphasizing the value of a man over any animal, verses 11-12. He healed many more people showing His compassion and gentleness and how He fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah 42.
Mark 3 - In Jesus' healing of the man on the Sabbath, He showed His righteous indignation, verse 5, when the Jews complained that He was breaking the Sabbath by His act of kindness. Jesus would heal many others, verses 6-12. Then He chose twelve men to be His followers, verses 13-19. These men included Judah, Iscariot, the man who would later betray Him to the Jews.
Luke 6 - Jesus shows His authority of the Sabbath, verses 1-11. Then Jesus spent the entire night in prayer on a mountain. Why? He would be making His selection of twelve men who would follow Him. He called these men "apostles," verse 13. Jesus then goes to what is called "...a level place..." verse 17. Here He gives a sermon that is very similar to His "Sermon on the Mount" of Matthew 5-7. In the sermon He asks a penetrating question in verse 46, "But why do you call Me 'Lord, Lord' and not do the things which I say?" Think on that.
