Insights on Today's Reading
Joel 1 - Joel's prophecy to the leaders of Judah is to prepare them for the judgment of the Day of the Lord, verse 15. Locusts will devastate the land. Other maladies have happened already. Joel calls for the people to call for an assembly and go to the Temple and cry to the Lord for help, verse 14. Joel has already cried to Him, verse 20.
Joel 2 - The Day of the Lord is coming, verse 1. Joel describes an army coming, but he is referring to a locust invasion. His description is clearly that of the locusts even to the point that the sky is black with them, verse 10. God calls for repentance, "...even now" in verse 12. God is merciful and will forgive. Joel then describes God's blessing on His people. Key verse is verse 25: God will "restore the years the locusts have eaten." He will restore the crops and the food the locusts have consumed. Also, verses 28-31 is quoted in Acts 2 to explain what was happening on the Day of Pentecost.
Joel 3 - God speaks of the Valley of Jehoshaphat in verse 2. God will enter into judgment there. The same valley is mentioned in verse 14 and speaks of multitudes in the "valley of decision." Preachers years ago used that as an illustration of many people who need to make a decision. However, the real meaning is that God will be making the decisions of who is righteous and who is not. It is God who knows the human heart and He knows who sincerely trusted in His Son and those who offered mere "lip service" to Him when their hearts were "far away" from Him.
