GREAT RESURRECTION VERSES TO MEMORIZE
I offer you seven verses to memorize, one for each day of this week that remind you of Christ's resurrection. All passages taken from the New King James Version
Matthew 28:6 - "He is not here; for He is risen, as He said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay."
Luke 24:46 - "Then He said to them, 'Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise again from the dead the third day."
Romans 6:4 - "Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life."
Romans 6:9 - "Knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, dies no more. Death no longer has dominion over Him."
1 Corinthians 15:4 - "And that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures."
Ephesians 1:19,20 - "And what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power which He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places."
Philippians 3:10 - "That I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death."
OTHER RESURRECTIONS IN THE BIBLE Part 2
Last week I shared with you five of the nine resurrections recorded in the Bible. I'd like to share the remaining four with you now. BUT there's another occurrence too, that includes "many" more! You'll see that at the end of this list.
Lazarus - Recorded in John 17:1-44. I'll quote just verses 43, 44.
"Now when He had said these things, He cried with a loud voice, 'Lazarus, come forth!' And he who had died came out bound hand and foot with grave clothes, and his face was wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, 'Loose him, and let him go.'"
Dorcas (Tabitha) - Recorded in Acts 9:36-41. I'll just quote verses 36, 37, 40
"At Joppa there was a certain disciple named Tabitha, which is translated Dorcas...she became sick and died...They sent two men [to] Peter...imploring him to not delay in coming...then Peter arose and went with them....Peter...knelt down and prayed. And turning to the body he said, 'Tabitha, arise.' And she opened her eyes, and when she saw Peter she sat up."
Eutychus - Recorded in Acts 20:9-12, I'll quote from verses 9, 10, 12
"And in a window sat a certain young man named Eutychus, who was sinking into a deep sleep...he fell down from the third story and was taken up dead. But Paul went down, fell on him, and embracing him said, 'Do not trouble yourselves, for his life is in him.'...and they brought the young man in alive..."
The Two Witnesses Recorded in Revelation 11:7-12
"When they finished their testimony, the beast that ascends out of the bottomless pit will make war against them, overcome them, and kill them. And their dead bodies will lie in the street...Now after the three-and-a-half days the breath of life from God entered them, and they stood up on their feet..."
The Other Occurrence:
Many Saints at the Time of Christ's Death and Resurrection - Recorded in Matthew 27:50-53
"And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit. Then, behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth quaked, and the rocks were split, and the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised; and coming out of the graves after His resurrection, they went into the holy city and appeared to many."
OTHER RESURRECTIONS IN THE BIBLE
Ever think about the fact that the Bible records at least 9 other people were raised from the dead? Take a look at five of these occurrences: (All Scripture quoted from the NKJV)
The Widow's Son - This was during the ministry of Elijah. 1 Kings 17:17-24 but quoting only verses 21, 22
"And he stretched himself out on the child three times, and cried out to the Lord and said, 'O Lord my God, I pray, let this child's soul come back to him.' Then the Lord heard the voice of Elijah; and the soul of the child came back to him, and he revived."
The Shunammite's Son - This was during the ministry of Elisha. 2 Kings 4:18-37 but quoting only verses 32, 33, 35
"When Elisha came into the house, there was the child lying dead on his bed. He went in therefore, shut the door behind the two of them, and prayed to the Lord...And he returned and walked back and forth in the house and again went up and stretched himself out on him; then the child sneezed seven times, and the child opened his eyes."
An Unknown Man - This man's body was placed in Elisha's tomb. 2 Kings 13:20, 21
"Then Elisha died, and they buried him. And the raiding bands from Moab invaded the land in the spring of the year. So it was, as they were burying a man, that suddenly they spied a band of raiders, and they put the man in the tomb of Elisha; and when the man was let down and touched the bones of Elisha, he revived and stood on his feet."
The Son of the Widow of Nain - In Jesus' ministry - Luke 7:11-16 but quoting only verses 12-15
"And when He came near the gate of the city, behold, a dead man was being carried out, the only son of his mother; and she was a widow...When the Lord saw her, He had compassion on her...and touched the open coffin...and He said, 'Young man, I say to you, arise.' So he who was dead sat up and began to speak. And He presented him to his mother."
Jairus' Daughter - In Jesus' ministry - Luke 8:41-56 but quoting only verses 41, 42, 49, 54, 55
"...there came a man, named Jairus..and he fell down at Jesus' feet and begged Him to come to this house, for he had an only daughter...and she was dying...someone said to him...'Your daughter is dead...'But He...took her by the hand and called, saying, 'Little girl, arise.' Then her spirit returned and she arose..."
More instances will be revealed next week.
THE "SIGNS OF LIFE" IN 1 JOHN
John has two very important reasons for writing this letter. He wanted people to know that Jesus Christ really came in human flesh and dwelt on earth. But he also wanted to assure believers that they were truly children of God. And he gave them several important evidences, or, what you might call "Signs of Life," to show a person has truly been born into God's family. I'll just give the chapter and verse. All quotations from the NKJV.
2:3 - "Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments." OBEDIENCE
Now, when John gives these signs he is not saying, "this is what every Christian MUST do." He is saying, "this is what every Christian should find their DESIRE and DELIGHT to do!" In other words, don't try to be a Christian! Just be the person God made you to be. And this first sign simply emphasizes that a believer wants to obey the Lord.
2:29 - "If you know that He is righteous, you know that everyone who practices righteousness if born of Him."
This is more than just obeying Christ's commands. This is living a life righteously as only God's child can. And the emphasis here is the word "practice." This is the normal way a true Christian will want to live their lives. Again, the emphasis is on being righteous because Christ lives in you, not trying to be righteous with your own effort.
3:9 - "Whoever has been born of God does not sin, for His seed remains in him; and he cannot sin, because he has been born of God."
DOESN'T PRACTICE SIN
Now, I quoted this from the New King James Version so I could explain what John is saying. Your new nature doesn't sin! Your new nature is Christ living in you. But, your old nature, the flesh, does sin. However, the believer will not keep on practicing sin without grief and desire to improve. There's a lot here to teach when I have more time and you have more patience! But let it be clear, a believer in Christ, by nature, does not want to make sin a practice in his/her life.
4:7 - "Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God."
LOVES OTHER BELIEVERS
A true Christian will find their heart filled with love for other believers. Now that doesn't mean that Christians always agree with one another and always get along with one another! But the evidence of new life in Christ is the desire to love your brothers and sisters in Christ because they belong to your Savior just as you do.
5:2 - "By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and keep His commandments."
Almost goes without saying, but a true child of God has God's love poured into their hearts by the Holy Spirit, Romans 5:5 and will naturally love the One who loves them, 1 John 4:19.
Now please remember, if you find yourself "struggling" to see these signs in your life, then you're missing the point! A baby should not have to struggle to breathe, cry, suckle, move, giggle, etc. It does those things NATURALLY! It's what any mother and father expect to see in their child. The same is true of these "Signs of Life" in a Christian: they are Divinely NATURAL, what God expects to see in His children.
