Insights on Today's Reading
1 Samuel 25 - Samuel dies and David and his men continue to dwell in the wilderness. They surround a group of shepherds who are caring for Nabal's sheep. He is a landowner but a profane and ungodly man. At a good time when sheep are being shorn, David sends some of his men to Nabal asking for some kind provision. Nabal sends them back with nothing and treats David with contempt. David calls his men to retaliate. Meanwhile, Nabal's beautiful wife, Abigail, recognizes the trouble coming and she brings great provision to David. She "saves the day" but when she tells Nabal, he basically dies from a massive stroke. David takes the opportunity to take Abigail in marriage.
1 Samuel 26 - True to form, Saul again takes pursuit of David. When David finds Saul and his men sleeping in the wilderness, David stealthily creeps into Saul's camp. Again, when tempted to kill Saul, David just takes Saul's spear and jug of water and leaves. Awaking Saul, David rebukes Saul's bodyguard, Abner. David also rebukes Saul for coming after him again. Saul promises once again not to chase David again.
1 Samuel 27 - Where does David go? To the Philistines! David asks and receives permission from the king, Achish, to dwell in a city of his land. He is given Ziklag as a home. While there, David attacks some of the enemies of Israel and Achish thinks he is attacking southern Judah. He thinks he has David's complete loyalty. David, however, is acting shrewdly and keeping a low profile, for the moment.
