Daily Bible Reading for Week of April 29 - May 5, 2018
4/29 2 Samuel 23, 24, 1 Kings 1 - David shares his closing thoughts regarding his kingship. Then his mighty men who followed him through "thick and thin" are listed. Sadly, the last name mentioned was Uriah, the husband of Bathsheba. In chapter 24 God chose to give us the details of one other of David's sins, the numbering of the people. Pride of accomplishments really has no place in the life of a godly individual. David would suffer, but the place where his offering was made would be the very site where the new Temple would be built. 1 Kings starts with another treacherous attempt from another son of David, Adonijah, to usurp David's throne. However, the sharp eye of Nathan the prophet averted this treachery and Solomon would be properly anointed as the new king.
4/30 John 9,10 - Chapter 9 deals with the healing of a man "born blind." It's sad when the disciples asked if his blindness was caused by his parents' sin or even the sins of this man! Jesus showed that God allows hardships in humanity to bring about a means for God to be glorified. John 10 gives the "Great Shepherd" study and worth your time to meditate on what you will read.
5/1 1 Kings 2-5 - Chapter 2 gives David's final words of encouragement and warning to his son, Solomon. The rest of the chapter deals with Solomon carrying out David's advice regarding those who might cause him trouble. Chapter three gives the great moment when God asked Solomon, "What do you want?" Consider carefully how Solomon responded and how God blessed him. The wisdom Solomon was noted for is seen in a very practical application with two harlots. Chapter 4 speaks of Solomon's officials and the extent of his kingdom. Chapter 5 gives us Solomon's plans on building the Temple.
5/2 1 Kings 6-8 - The description of the building of the Temple is given. Note how the large stones were measured and cut at the quarry before they would be installed at the construction site. Chapter 7 speaks of Solomon's own palace and the expertise of Huram, from Tyre, and how he skillfully built so many of the special features of the Temple. Chapter 8 gives the account of the Ark of the Covenant being placed in the Temple. Then Solomon gives a special sermon followed by his great prayer for God's blessing on His people, and His care for them when they would sin and repent.
5/3 John 11,12 - Chapter 11 deals with the great miracle of Lazarus' death and Jesus bringing him back to life. Note the great "I Am" statement in verses 25,26. In chapter 12 John speaks of Jesus being anointed by Mary and His triumphal entry into Jerusalem. John shows that Jesus' life was filled with clear teaching and mighty miracles, but still the people would reject Him.
5/4 1 Kings 9-11 - In chapter 9 God responds to Solomon's prayer. The fame of Solomon is given to show how God had blessed him. In chapter 10 you will read of the visit of the Queen of Sheba and her overwhelming surprise as to the extent of Solomon's kingdom and wisdom. Chapter 11 is another "sad chapter" of the Bible as you will read how Solomon would end up with 999 too many women in his life!
5/5 1 Kings 12-15 - Rehoboam, Solomon's son, would obviously not show the wisdom his father had. However, you will note that God had a plan to bring about the division of Israel into northern and southern tribes. Jeroboam, the king of the northern tribes, would foolishly have golden calves made for the people to worship! How quickly God's people turned away from Him! In chapter 13 a prophet would condemn Jeroboam's folly. In chapter 14 God would take Jeroboam's son in judgment. But note how God noted that in this boy was something found good towards God. Chapter 15 shows the good kings, Asa, and Jehoshaphat, who would succeed Rehoboam's son.
