Insights on Today's Reading
Lamentations 3:37-66 - In the latter half of chapter 3 Jeremiah asks why a person should complain, verse 39, when they are punished for their own wrongdoing? Even though he calls for a soul-searching on the part of the people they do not heed him. In verses 52-66 Jeremiah shares his experience being imprisoned and thrown into the pit, which was mentioned in chapter 38:6-13.
Lamentations 4 - During the siege of Jerusalem the suffering of the people as extreme. Starvation was felt both in humans and animals. Even parents showed now compassion for their young. Jeremiah even speaks of the sins committed by both prophets and priests, verse 13.
Lamentations 5 - Jeremiah brings a confession about the sins of the people, verses 7 and 16. He cries out to God to turn the people back to Him and they would be restored, verse 21. But he ends his lament with the sad reality that God is angry with His people.
