Insights on Today's Reading
As you read the prophecy of Zephaniah note that he is of royal lineage, being the great-great-grandson of Hezekiah, 1:1. His theme is dealing with the coming Day of the Lord.
Zephaniah 1 - God will bring judgment, especially on the household of Judah. One of the main reasons is their worship of the host of heaven, verse 5. Paul spoke of this sin in Romans 1 as he said people forgot the Creator and worshiped the creation instead. Verse 7 calls for people to "be still in the presence of the Lord God." You will find a similar thought in Psalm 46:10.
Zephaniah 2 - In the midst of judgment God calls for people to seek Him and His righteousness, verse 3. That is very similar to Matthew 6:33 (look it up and read it). God also speaks of the coming judgment of surrounding nations.
Zephaniah 3 - GOD SINGS!! Note the end of verse 17, "He will rejoice over you with singing." What a pleasurable thought! Think that when we get to heaven we will hear singing beyond our wildest imagination!! And notice that the songs God will sing will "...quiet you with His love..." What a future we have!
