Ephesians 5:2 NLT - "Live a life filled with love, following the example of Christ. He loved us and offered Himself as a sacrifice for us, a pleasing aroma to God."
If we are to imitate our Lord let's start with His love. He showed tremendous love for His disciples, "...He had loved His disciples during His ministry on earth, and now He loved them to the very end." John 13:3 NLT. He who told His disciples to "love one another" set the example in His love for them. The same is true of us today - Christ's still loves His disciples, like you and me. As He loves us, we should love one another. It is the primary way our witness is clear to this world that we belong to Him - see John 13:34,35.
How did Christ ultimately show His love for us: "He offered Himself as a sacrifice for us..." Remember John 15:13, "There is no greater love than to lay down one's life for one's friends." NLT. Christ showed the kind of love that is not only unconditional love but also self-sacrificing love. He gave Himself for us because He loved us.
This sacrifice that Christ gave was like a sweet aroma to His Father in heaven, and thus, was a fully acceptable sacrifice to cover the penalty of our sin. And our love for one another gives to God the same beautiful fragrance that He enjoys to savor.
