Insights on Today's Reading
Hebrews 11 - This is the great Faith Chapter of the Bible. Numerous Old Testament individuals are highlighted and an example of their faith in God is given. It is important to note in verse 6 that "without faith it is impossible to please God..." It is encouraging to see that not only godly patriarchs like Abraham and Moses are mentioned, but also people like Rahab, verse 31 are spoken of as well. It is noteworthy to see that in the middle of verse 35 the focus changes from people who faced difficulties and were rescued to those who were tortured and suffered greatly at the hands of their persecutors.
Hebrews 12 - The "cloud of witnesses" spoken of in verse 1, is not a picture of the saints in heaven "looking down" on us on earth. The "cloud" should be understood as the "crowd" of individuals spoken of in chapter 11 who gave witness by their lives that they put aside hindrances to their walk with God, verse 1. The writer encourages his readers to "look to Jesus" who is the "author and finisher" of our faith, verse 2. God's chastisement of His children is spoken of in verses 5-11. A contrast is given between Mount Sinai, verses 18-21, and Mount Zion in heaven, verse 22. The earthly mount spoke of fear and blackness whereas the heavenly mount speaks of "the living God" and the gathering of the Church before "Jesus the Mediator of the new covenant" verses 22,23.
Hebrews 13 - Practical emphasis is place on the possibility of "entertaining angels" verse 2; praying for those who are imprisoned for their faith, verse 3; and the sanctity of marriage, verse 4. Believers are encouraged to observe the lives of their overseers, verse 7 and 17, and to imitate them. Notice the "sacrifices" a believer may make to God in verses 15,16. A great benediction is offered for the believers in verses 20,21.
