Insights on Today's Reading
2 John 1 - John wrote to "the elect lady" and her children, verse 1. Some think this is John's way of describing a particular local church, referring the people who make up that church as a "lady." Others, including myself, believe he was writing to a particular woman and her family that had caught his attention. Perhaps this woman is a widow, hence that's why John doesn't refer to her husband. Whoever she was her faith was commendable and her children were "walking in the truth" verse 4. John emphasized that real love for the Lord leads people to "walk according to His commandments." John also has strong words against those who go door-to-door preaching a doctrine that is different than what the Bible teaches, verses 9,10.
3 John 1 - John's letter to Gaius places high priority on caring for traveling Christian workers who are doing business for the Lord, verses 5,6. John emphasizes the ministry of supporting these missionaries and the responsibility of the church to "send them forward on their journey" verse 6. John also has commendable words for "Demetrius" verse 12. But John is really upset with another "believer" named "Diotrephes" verse 9, who was acting arrogantly among the others demanding "preeminence" among them.
