Insights on Today's Reading
Revelation 12 - This chapter gives a little history of the conflict between Satan and Israel over the years. The woman seen here is Israel as a nation. They are the people who "bore a male Child" who is Christ. The "red dragon" is Satan, and Michael represents the angels of Heaven. This gives both history and prophecy and recognizes the war in Heaven where Satan was "cast out" verse 9. Satan has been at war with God from the beginning. Satan will attack believers in any way possible, especially with accusation, verse 10. Believers can overcome him by the "blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the death" verse 11.
Revelation 13 - This chapter gives a picture of the rise of the Antichrist, the "beast" of verse 1 and the prophet, "another beast," who orders the world to worship the first beast. This is Satan's and Man's final attempt to usurp rule over the world and to totally reject God's sovereignty. This prophet will order people to receive the "mark" of the beast, verse 16-18, being the number 666.
Revelation 14 - This is another parenthesis in Revelation. The Lord is seen as "the Lamb" verse 1, who is standing with the 144,000 faithful witnesses. There is rejoicing in their presence and a "new song" is sung, verse 3. The "everlasting gospel" verse 6, is preached throughout the world still calling people to give "glory to Him, for the hour of His judgment has come." The gospel is not only a revealing of God's love for the repentant sinner, but a revealing of God's judgment against those who reject Him.
Revelation 15 - The "seven last plagues" are revealed. They are also known as the "bowl judgments" taken from verse 7. The people who were martyred for Christ, verse 3, will sing "the song of Moses" and the "song of the Lamb", which gives glory to God and a warning to the world of judgments, verses 3,4.
Revelation 16 - All of the bowl judgments are poured out and a word of testimony is given in verse 7 to speak of God's judgments as "righteous." Men who sow rebellion will receive judgment. The place of the final battle, known at "Armageddon" verse 16, is the Valley of Megiddo, located on the north side of the plain of Jezreel. When the seventh bowl judgment is poured out a "loud voice came out of the temple of heaven" proclaiming, "It is done." Similar to Jesus' cry on the cross, John 19:30, this exclamation emphasizes that God has poured out His judgment completely.
Revelation 17 - The "great harlot" of verse one is the World Church which rules out of a city with seven mountains, verse 9, giving it an actual location. This "church" will be known as "Babylon the Great," verse 5. People who have not turned in faith to Jesus Christ will be forced to align themselves with this world religion.
Revelation 18 - "Babylon," verse 2, is the name given not only to the city where worship will be governed, which many believe to be Rome, but also it refers to the religious and the political rule over all the earth. This corrupt system will be destroyed. The lament on earth will show the materialistic attitude this world has had since the beginning. Men will not turn to God but will cry that their source of worldly goods is gone, verses 9-24.
