Ephesians 4:28 NLT - "If you are a thief, quit stealing. Instead, use your hands for good hard work, and then give generously to others in need."
Do you see an obvious total change of behavior in this verse? Paul goes from telling people to stop stealing and then tells them to start giving!! And that's the way Christ changes our lives! He takes a bad habit away and gives us a good, new habit to replace it.
Paul was dealing with people just like you and me. We used to do things in our past that we're ashamed of now, Romans 6:20,21. But since we've come to know the Lord and since we want to live our lives "worthy of our calling" 4:1, we're ready to change the way we live. Instead of stealing Paul encourages the believer to work hard and do something profitable with their life. But he goes even further by suggesting that their labor should produce income that they can share with "others in need."
Jesus didn't just save us to stop us from doing bad. He saved us to start doing good. And helping others with what we have is doing what God did for us. He gave from His abundant resources and, thus, gave us the best example of finding it is "better to give than to receive!"
