Insights on Today's Reading
1 Kings 9 - As Solomon had finished his prayer God came and spoke with him, giving him both assurances and a severe warning. If Solomon and the people of Israel obeyed the Lord, his throne would be established and his generations to come would be blest. The warning was the opposite. If Solomon and the people disobeyed God's clear commands God would removed the people from the land and He would cast the temple out of his sight. King Hiram and Solomon exchanged gifts and Hiram was deeply disappointed with the cities Solomon gave him. I've always been disappointed myself with Solomon for that. Solomon's fame would grow, but he needed to remember where his wisdom came from!
2 Chronicles 8 - This chapter speaks of Solomon's fame and the many things he accomplished in his kingdom. He wisely took the people who still lived in the land of Israel who had been there after the days of Joshua and made them laborers to work in the forests and quarries to provide the wood and stone necessary for the Temple. Solomon followed his father's example in delegating priests for the service of the Temple. He knew God was a God of order and design and he made sure the worship in God's house would please Him.
