Exodus 20:4a NKJV - "You shall not make for yourself a carved image..."
Commentary: I don't always mean to be so blunt, but let me ask you a question? Is Jesus your idol? First, do you treat Jesus the way some people treat an idol? Is He your "good luck charm?" Is He Someone you can run to when you're in trouble and cry out to Him to deliver you from some hardship, and then leave Him until the next troublesome situation develops? Do you bow down to Him as if He was the "object of your affection" but not necessarily the Lord of your life? Second, do you "carve" your own idea of Jesus and worship what you carved? That is, do you have "your idea" of what Jesus is like and worship that idea? You see, a lot of Christians never really take time to examine the Scriptures to see just who Jesus really is! And right away let me say no one, and I mean NO ONE, can fully grasp all the Bible has to say about Jesus, not in this lifetime. But, the Bible does give us glorious images of a GREAT Savior and Shepherd and at the same time gives us a beautiful picture of a kind and gentle Lamb who really loves and cares for His own. One of the driving desires of my life is to know Jesus as He is, not as I think He is. Sure, I have to start with a conceived idea of Him the minute I trust Him as Savior, but I need to grow to know Him better. That is why the Apostle Peter ended his words with 2 Peter 3:18 NKJV, "But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory both now and forever. Amen."
