Insights on Today's Reading
Deuteronomy 5 - This is the second place in the Bible where all Ten Commandments are listed. These comprise the basic rules God meant for Israel to follow to enjoy their lives in the Promised Land. Note God's desire in verse 29 that all of Israel would "have a heart" to follow the Lord and fear Him. Deuteronomy 6 - This is one of the clearest statements in Scripture of the sacredness of the believer's home as the place for instructing children to follow the Lord. From the point of getting up in the morning to going to bed in the evening the Scriptures are to be taught, explained, and practiced. Parents were given the primary responsibility to live out the Word of God in the presence of their children. The same pattern is to be followed in our day as well. Deuteronomy 7 - It's great when God clearly states that He loves His people. You read that in verses 8 and 13 and it shows the affection of God's heart for those who belong to Him. He made clear He didn't choose these people because of their large number or because of their devotion to Him. He chose them because He loved them. That truth is still to be applied to every believer today!
