Daily Bible Reading for Week of March 18-24, 2018
This week you will read the closing chapters of Deuteronomy which also closes out the Pentateuch, the first five books of the Bible, which are also simply known as "The Law." Chapter 28 gives a very clear description of the promised blessings God gave to Israel if they obeyed His Law. But equally clear is the description of what God would do if Israel became disobedient. They had no excuse for saying that they didn't know the consequences of disobedience! As you read further in the historical books of Israel's failure just remember this chapter. God gives what is known as The Palestinian Covenant in chapters 29, 30. This refers to Israel's promised ownership of the Land of Promise they were soon to receive.
Chapters 31-34 give Moses' last words to the people. They include The Song of Moses in chapter 32 and his blessings on the twelve tribes of Israel. The closing chapter speaks of Moses' death and God's personal appreciation of Moses in 34:10 where it is said that "the Lord knew [Moses] face to face."
In Luke's Gospel in chapter 5 you will read of the Lord's calling various disciples and in chapter 6 the Lord is seen as praying all night, verse 12, before He named the twelve men who He would call apostle. Chapter six also gives Luke's version of the Sermon on the Mount.
In Luke 7,8 acts of compassion are seen in His ministry of healing and comfort to those who were hurting or grieving. He made special mention of the woman "who was a sinner," 7:37 and Jesus' lesson on forgiveness He gave in a Pharisee's house. Note in chapter 8 the mention of various women who followed Jesus as well and their support of His work, verses 1-3.
You will start the Book of Joshua which is the record of the Israel's conquering the inhabitants of the land of Canaan and the distribution of that land to them. Joshua will frequently make clear that the Lord would give them victory as they obediently fought against their enemies. When you read chapters 6 and 7 you will read of the conquest of Jericho and the defeat before the people of Ai. But you will see how God had to rebuke Israel for disobedience, but then He would restore them to victory when they dealt with "sin in the camp."
