This verse shares a common thought with Hebrews 4:15 NLT, "This High Priest of ours understands our weakness..." One of the great truths regarding the Lord is that He became a man that He might fully identify with us and share in our struggles on earth. And we can appreciate Him because He truly knows the troubles we face because He faced them too.
This is one of the best ways we can minister to others: sharing common ground with them. Doing so allows us to build a rapport with those we seek to win to Christ. But lets be careful to be honest enough to say to someone, "No, I don't really understand the exact issues you're facing." But lending them a sympathetic ear can open up opportunities for them to see Christ in us. This is why James also says, "...be swift to hear, slow to speak..." James 1:19 NKJV. And remember, even if you don't know exactly what someone is going through doesn't mean you don't know about weakness, failure, and defeat. But you can also tell them how you found in Christ the strength, success, and victory that only He provides.
