Ephesians 6:2 NKJV - "Honor your father and mother, which is the first commandment with promise."
God has commanded us to honor our parents. There are clearly several reasons why:
First - Your parents were used of God to bring you into life. As God is the Creator of all life, He has used fathers and mothers to bring children into this world.
Second - Your parents represent God - They are the first people you meet. Any idea of God is going to start with what you see in your father and mother. They model God's character to you. For example, when you're loved by your parents you begin to understand what it means that God loves you.
Third - Your parents teach you what God wants you to know. Their instructions, if founded on the Word of God, will be some of the first truths you'll learn in life. They will be the "good treasure in your heart" (Luke 6:45) that will help you bring forth good in your behavior.
Fourth - Your parents will probably be the first to introduce you to Jesus and His love for you. The Bible Stories they read and the songs they taught were all used of God to plant the seed of the Gospel in your heart leading you to know of your need to trust Jesus as Savior.
