Insights on Today's Reading
Mark 11 - Mark writes of the Triumphal Entry of Christ into Jerusalem. He speaks of the Lord's need for a colt to ride on. He sends two disciples to Bethany to untie the animal and bring it. They do this without asking permission, but when confronted, they simply say, "The Lord has need of it" verse 3. That was enough! The people understood and did not hinder them. You will see one of the reasons why the scribes and chief priests hated Jesus in verse 18. He spoke with authority and the people were "astonished at His teaching." Later in the chapter the same antagonists challenged Jesus on where He got His authority. He, in turn, challenged them with a question as to where John the Baptist got his authority, verses 27-33. They wouldn't say what they knew was true, so Jesus refused to answer their question as well.
John 12 - Jesus loved the family of Mary, Martha, and Lazarus. They had become good companions and they offered Him their hospitality. Mary, who is known best for her sitting at the feet of Jesus to listen to Him (Luke 10:38-42) is also the one who anointed Him in preparation for His "burial" verse 7. Whether she knew of His impending death is not clear, but she may have been listening to Him better than His disciples when He had clearly taught that He would be sacrificed on the cross. Another noteworthy point in this chapter is that some Greeks came to Philip and said, "Sir, we wish to see Jesus" verse 21. Many preachers have said this is true of so many people in the world - they want to see Jesus! Let us show them in our lives!
