Insights on Today's Reading
Matthew 23 - This chapter is devoted to Jesus' criticism of the way of the Pharisee. They demanded much from the average Jewish citizen but they wouldn't carry their own load of responsibility, verse 3,4. Jesus pronounced seven woes on the Pharisees for their hypocrisy and damaging teachings that caused many Jews to be more concerned with their adherence to the Pharisees laws than they were to following God.
Luke 20 - This is Luke's version of the challenge to Jesus' authority in verses 1-8; the parable of the vineyard owner, verse 9-19; the answer Jesus gave regarding paying taxes to Caesar, verses19-26; His answer to the Sadducees, verses 27-38; and His exposure of the hypocrisy of the Jewish leaders, verses 39-47.
Luke 21 - Jesus commended the widow for the total sacrifice of her offering to God, verses 1-4. He then spoke of coming events surrounding His kingdom on earth from verses 5-38. This section deals with much of what Matthew reported of Jesus' Olivet Discourse. Jesus warned against being deceived by "false christs," verse 8. He also gave His disciples the promise that when they were called to speak before their persecutors, that the Spirit would give them arguments which their enemies could not contradict or resist, verses 14,15. He called all His followers to keep "watching" for all these events to unfold, verses 34-36.
