Insights on Today's Reading
Matthew 8:1-13 - Jesus shows His power to heal as He shows compassion. Note with the healing of the leper that He "touched" the leper, verse 3. Because a leper should never be touched, Leviticus 13:45,46, Jesus was showing His compassion to this man. Jesus also healed the servant of a centurion even when the centurion told Him that He didn't need to come into his home. All Jesus had to do was "speak a word," verse 8, and the servant would be healed. Jesus "marveled" at this man's faith. Luke 7 - Jesus' healing of the centurion's servant is detailed and then Jesus raises a dead man back to life in this man's funeral procession! Jesus spoke very highly of John the Baptist. John had sent two disciples to question Jesus of His credentials as the Messiah. Jesus spoke of His miracles in response to John's inquiry. Jesus also showed compassion to a woman who showed Him love while in a Pharisees' house. He also rebuked the Pharisee for his judgmental attitude against the woman.
