Psalm 127:3 NKJV - "Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb is a reward."
I remember Howard Hendricks, from the Dallas Theological Seminary, pointing out the words, "heritage of the Lord" can mean, "an assignment from God." Children are given to parents as homework is given to children! And it is often in the home where we parents can learn so much from our kids.
Children, in our homes, give us a great understanding of our place in our heavenly family. When you have children you learn pretty quickly what God deals with! He raises us as children and allows us to have our own kids that we might get a first-hand education in parenting! God is the ultimate Parent! And our children are God's way of teaching us the joys and the frustrations in raising kids. He allows us to deal with their stubbornness and with their willingness; their greediness and their willing to share. We watch them fail and we watch them succeed; we watch them try new things and we watch them try to avoid challenges; and through it all we remember what our parents said about our childhood! But, praise the Lord, He also provides a perfect "Instruction Book" to help us and the Spirit of God to be our Teacher!
Our children teach us how to be good children of God. As we seek our children's obedience we know that is exactly what God wants from us. As we seek to guide our children along the right path we remember that's what God is doing every day for us. As we comfort our children when they are upset and/or ill we find God is our Comforter and the One who encourages us in our struggles. We also learn that being parents is a lifelong responsibility. And so, our Heavenly Father will never stop being "Our Father in Heaven."
Children are also very unique. When we have more than one child we compare each to the other and realize each one has qualities and abilities that set them apart from their siblings. And that is certainly true in the family of God. Every Christian is a unique child of God. And God treats us as unique, which is one of the important lessons we learn from our children.
God wants us to love our children unconditionally and care for them without expecting anything in return. That is how God is with us. And as God doesn't "force" our love for Him, He is thrilled when we show the desire and pleasure in doing so! If you're a parent you know the joy you have when your children spontaneously express their love for you.
You can learn a lot from your children. They may go off to school to be taught, but when they come home be ready for your next lesson!
