Insights on Today's Reading
Matthew 2 - This is the familiar account of the Wise Men's visit to Jerusalem seeking, "...the King of the Jews" verse 2. This caused a real stir in the city and especially with King Herod, verse 3. The Wise Men were directed to Bethlehem and they found Jesus and His mother in "...a house" verse 11, implying Jesus was not an infant and may have been closer to two years of age. Three gifts do not mean that there were only three Wise Men. Herod's rage and jealousy spurred him on to order the atrocity of the killing of innocent children, verse 16. Joseph, Mary, and the Child fled to Egypt and eventually settled in Nazareth.
Luke 2:39-52 - This is the only Biblical account of Jesus' childhood past His infancy. Any other account from "so-called gospels" are not to be trusted as reliable. By the time Jesus was twelve He understood His calling and He showed it by spending three days with the scholars and scribes at the Temple. He still maintained subjection to His parents but they knew God the Father had important plans for His Son. Though Jesus was perfect God He still "...increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men" verse 52.
