Insights on Today's Reading

John 5 - Jesus heals a lame man which brought about a confrontation from the Jews against Jesus.  Amidst their conversation Jesus refers to God as His Father, verse 17.  The Jews correctly state that His doing so showed that He was claiming to be on equal footing with God, verse 18.  Jesus did not deny that and we, therefore, are given a great passage to use showing the Divinity of our Savior.  Jesus gives several witnesses to His authority:  John the Baptist, verses 33-35; Jesus' works,  verse 36; the Father's witness, verses 37,38; and, the Scripture, verses 39-47.  Please note that Jesus did not tell the Jews that they must "search the Scriptures daily" verse 39.  He merely told them that was what they were doing already but it didn't do them much good because they were not willing to come to Him, verse 40, whom the Scriptures were pointing, verse 39.
