John 21:19b NKJV - "He said to him, 'Follow Me.'"
Okay, you ask, what's so special about these familiar words? Why highlight this as a Daily Verse?
Without going into a major study, or even a minor one, just look at Who said this and to whom was it said? Jesus is the One who said this. Who heard it? Peter! What's the significance? Well, Jesus had just brought Peter through the question of whether Peter really loved the Lord, three times! You know why that is important, don't you? Peter denied Christ three times and the Lord was restoring him to fellowship by giving Peter a chance to renew his love for his Savior three times. That was special and shows Christ's mercy to a man who probably felt like he would never be able to hold his head up in the presence of the Son of God.
But, there's something very special about our Daily Verse. Not only was Peter being restored to fellowship with Christ, he was also hearing again the first call to serve the Lord he heard when Jesus walked by his boat, as recorded in Matthew 4:19, "Follow Me..." I wonder if Peter wondered if the Lord would still want him after his denials. Would Jesus be willing to give Peter another chance to stand up for Christ by giving him a renewed ministry? Well, when Jesus said, "Follow Me" in John 21 He was making clear that grace restores!
Ever fail the Lord and assume you're put on the "back burner" and considered too high a risk for the Lord to use you again? Take a good look at Peter. His failure is pretty severe, but his restoration was beautiful! He would serve the Lord and he would go all the way to martyrdom for his Savior! God's grace calls us to service and if we should fall, God's grace restores us too!
