Insights on Today's Reading
Ezekiel 20 - Once again there were elders who came before Ezekiel to inquire of the Lord. In verses 1-32 God gives a history of His raising up Israel, telling her to abandon her pagan ways, gave her His ordinances and laws. He cared for her in the wilderness and brought her into His promised land. However, she rebelled against Him. He promised to scatter them among the Gentiles, verse 23, and He would judge them for departing from Him. In verses 33-48, God promises that He will bring them out from the countries where they were scattered, verse 34. They would know who God was. Some believe that from verse 37 on the Lord is speaking of a future prophecy of judgment and regathering of Israel and making a judgment of those who will enter the kingdom under Christ.
Ezekiel 21 - Ezekiel was called by God to "sigh" verse 6 and "wail" verse 12 to show the sadness God felt as He watched His people be conquered by Babylon. The use of the word "sword" indicates the punishment the people would feel. Even the Ammonites, verse 20, who had aligned themselves with Israel against Nebuchadnezzar, would also face judgment. Note how God spoke against the proud in verse 26. But, in verse 27, the One referred to as "...He comes whose right it is..." is Christ, who will take the throne and rule over the world from Jerusalem.
