Jeremiah 4:16 NKJV - "Your ways and your doings have procured these things for you. This is your wickedness, because it is bitter, because it reaches your heart."
Jeremiah 5:25 NKJV - "Your iniquities have turned these things away, and your sins have withheld good from you."
Some of you may remember I used these two verses in my previous Weekly Connection study some time ago. I thought they would be good for you to see the contrast again.
Jeremiah 4:16 comes after the prophet was telling the Judeans that they were facing trouble because of their behavior. He made it quite clear that trouble comes when sin is in control. That is still a principle that is active today. Sin brings death, but it also brings a lot of trouble as well. How do you avoid that kind of trouble? Simple: Obedience to God!
Jeremiah 5:25 shows the other side of the picture. Here, the prophet reminds the Judeans that God has so many good things He would love to do for them, but their sins kept that from happening! The people somehow thought that God would always bless them even if they were sinful. But they needed to remember the 28th chapter of Deuteronomy where Moses made it clear: Obedience brings blessing; Disobedience brings trouble.
